Greece, Turkey and Croatia Cruise onboard Royal Caribbean International Rhapsody of the Seas
Rhapsody of the Seas is the lead ship of Royal Caribbean’s Vision Class ships. The maiden voyage of this 69,130 ton vessel took place on May 16, 1995 and has a maximum passenger capacity of 2,074 guests.
After a busy day exploring your ports of call, return to your Ocean View stateroom, designed to be a comfortable, relaxing place for you to relax and refresh after your on-shore adventures. Each stateroom offers a king bed or two twin beds, telephone and television.
On board there is a wealth of activity, dining and entertainment options to choose from. Activities include the pool with an adults-only Solarium with retractable roof, fitness centre, a rock climbing wall, mini-golf and Vitality Spa. Dining options range from the Park Café to specialty restaurants such as Chops Grille and Izumi and entertainment includes Broadway-style shows, and the Casino Royale.
Your journey begins in Venice, Italy. Ports of call on your sailing itinerary include Dubrovnik, Croatia; Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey; Santorini and Katalolon, Greece, before returning to Venice.
Venice is like no other city in the world. It is composed of 117 islands in the Venetian Lagoon and held together by a series of canals. It was established more than 1,000 years ago by seafarers and Roman refugees and this magnificent city continues to be the heart of Italian culture as well as a mecca for hopeless romantics.
There are so many things to see and do in Venice. Soak up the lively atmosphere of St. Mark’s Square…roam the fascinating rooms of the Doge’s Palace and see its famous Bridge of Sighs, linking the palace to the state prisons…take a walking tour through the quaint cobblestone streets and across the endless Venetian bridges…dine in an outdoor café and, of course, no visit to Venice would be complete without enjoying a gondola ride through the famous canals.
Dubrovnik is situated at the edge of the Adriatic Sea in the very south of Croatia, and is rich in history and natural beauty. With bays, beaches, steep cliffs and dense woodland areas, Dubrovnik's landscape is unexpected. Dubrovnik's impressive medieval architecture and its beautiful Mediterranean landscape still remain.
The old city of Dubrovnik and the walls that surround it have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Portions of the wall date back to the 13th century. The ramparts are intact and encircle the old city with a circumference of more than 1.5 miles. Don't miss the chance to take a walking tour along its length for a spectacular view of the city it surrounds.
Kusadasi (Ephesus) is situated on the west coast of Turkey and is reputed to be one of the most attractive cities of the Aegean. Key among its attractions is that it is the gateway to the ruins of ancient Ephesus, a magnificent regional capital of Imperial Rome and once a powerful trading and religious city. Travel through the Magnesia Gate, the main entrance to the ancient city and continue along marble streets grooved by chariot wheels. Gaze upon beautiful temples, porticoes, fountains and frescoes.
Closer to the port, visit a Venetian-Byzantine castle, an Ottoman mosque and a Turkish old town. Kusadasi is a shoppers’ paradise with markets and boutiques as well as the Grand Bazaar, a massive collection of shops selling everything from spices to clothing to carpets and souvenirs.
Santorini is one of the most popular destinations of Greece and is known as the home of one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The island name comes from ‘Santa Irini’ and is officially called Thera. Located in the south of the Cycladic islands, 130 nautical miles from Athens, the island covers an area of 96 square kilometers and has a coastline of 69 kilometers.
Santorini’s spectacular caldera is a vestige of what was thought to be the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history, believed by some to have caused the disappearance of Atlantis. The volcanic eruption destroyed the centre of the island, causing it to sink and create today’s caldera which is in the middle of a 32-square mile basin of water. Around the basin, hanging on cliffs of 150m to 300m in height, are some of the most beautiful traditional villages of the Cyclades. The lively colours of the white Cycladic houses and blue painted windows contrast stunningly against the black volcanic rocks rising from the sea, inspiring artists and visitors alike. The eruptions have also created beaches unlike any you will see and the Red Sand Beach is one of the most beautiful.
Katakolon is a quiet seaside Greek village in western Ilia, Pyrgos municipality. Located by the side of the Ionian Sea on the Peloponnese peninsula, Katakolon became a port in 1857 and has a population of approximately 600 people.
Katakolon is the gateway to Olympia where the ancient Greeks flocked every four years for more than a millennium to celebrate the sacred games in honour of the god Zeus. It is just a 30-minute drive from the port to visit the ruins at Olympia where you will find the remarkable ruins of many significant buildings including the gymnasium, the guesthouse, a workshop and the stadium itself.
In the town local galleries and shops found on the main street have traditional Greek crafts created by the local artists. The local cafés have wonderful fresh seafood and local favourites on the menus and everything tastes better with a beautiful view of the deep blue Ionian Sea.
